30,000 sparkling reasons to enter Fashions on the Field at Snake Gully Cup
This year’s Fashions on the Field competition at Snake Gully Cup on Friday 13 November, is set to break regional fashions on the field prize records, with Sydney jeweller Nicholas Haywood Jewellery confirmed as the major sponsor.
Nicholas, who has a close connection with Gundagai, having lived in the area as a child, reached out to the Gundagai Adelong Racing Club in September to discuss a potential sponsorship. Following further discussions with organisers, Nicholas offered a jewellery package to the value of $30,000.
According to Nicholas, the sponsorship is a tribute to his late mother, Helen, who won fashions on the field at Snake Gully Cup in 1992, which was also Nicholas’ first day on a racecourse.
“My mother won the event wearing a dress she made herself, and I remember we had the local newspaper article and photo displayed on our fridge for many years,” said Nicholas. “Mum passed away very suddenly on Friday 14 November last year and this year’s Snake Gully Cup will mark one year since her passing, which made me think of supporting the Gundagai Adelong Racing Club and Fashions on the Field.”

Along with Nicholas Haywood Jewellery, long standing prize sponsors including Carmel Butler Millinery, KIMO Estate, Nimbo Fork Lodge and Coach House Flowers will bring the total prize package to more than $33,000.
“We are beyond excited to have Nicholas Haywood Jewellery on board as our major sponsor,” said Fashions on the Field coordinator Renee Lindley. “It’s an honor and a privilege to help Nicholas pay homage to his mum Helen, and to showcase his beautiful jewellery.
“I’m also thrilled that our long-standing millinery, accommodation and floral partners are on board again this year, as the competition could not go ahead without their ongoing support and generosity.”
The four categories this year include Best Dressed Local, Best Dressed Visitor, Best Suited and Best Headwear.
This year’s event will once again celebrate individual style and creativity. “Our judges will expect head to toe styling across every category, however, they will also be looking for uniqueness and fashion with an edge,” said Renee.
The Best Dressed Local category is open to those who reside within the Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council or Snowy Valleys Council. Best Dressed Visitor will be open to anyone who resides outside these council areas.
“In the Best Dressed categories, the key focus for judges will be head to toe grooming and a look that stands out from the crowd – every aspect, from the hair, to the clothing, to the millinery, to the accessories, must all complement each other,” said Renee. “With this year's Spring fashion colour palette ranging from soft pastels, to earthy neutrals, to bold greens, deep navies, and rich plums, there's really no better place to show your individual style and wear what you love.”
The Best Suited category is again open to entrants both locally and from afar. The suit must consist of at least two coordinated pieces – either a jacket and pants or jacket and skirt. Headwear is essential. “Structured suiting is still very popular. We are also seeing a lot of accessorizing with unique brooches, pocket squares, jewellery and belts, so this category is going to be a tough one for the judges,” said Renee.
Those entering the Best Headwear category need a statement headpiece. Complementary styling is what the judges will be looking for, so the headpiece must be carefully considered in the overall styling.
'Most importantly - and this applies to all categories - dress not only for the season, but also for comfort and confidence,” says Renee. “If you love what you're wearing and it fits you well, then you are going to stand out and have a lot more fun.
The final judging panel is still being finalized, however, organisers can confirm lead judges will be Sally Pitt from Christian Dior Couture and Michael Rogers, formally of Chanel.
Entrants can nominate themselves on the day with an on-course facility set up near the main stage, specifically for Fashions on the Field entrants. Judging will commence after Race 3 and may run across a couple of races, depending on entrant numbers.
