This year’s Fashions on the Field competition at Snake Gully Cup on Friday 13 November, is set to break regional fashions on the field prize records, with Sydney jeweller

          Nicholas Haywood Jewellery

           confirmed as the major sponsor.

Nicholas, who has a close connection with Gundagai, having lived in the area as a child, reached out to the Gundagai Adelong Racing Club in September to discuss a potential sponsorship. Following further discussions with organisers, Nicholas offered a jewellery package to the value of $30,000.

According to Nicholas, the sponsorship is a tribute to his late mother, Helen, who won fashions on the field at Snake Gully Cup in 1992, which was also Nicholas’ first day on a racecourse.

“My mother won the event wearing a dress she made herself, and I remember we had the local newspaper article and photo displayed on our fridge for many years,” said Nicholas. “Mum passed away very suddenly on Friday 14 November last year and this year’s Snake Gully Cup will mark one year since her passing, which made me think of supporting the Gundagai Adelong Racing Club and Fashions on the Field.”

long standing prize sponsors including Carmel Butler Millinery, KIMO Estate, Nimbo Fork Lodge and Coach House Flowers will bring the total prize package to more than $33,000.

“We are beyond excited to have Nicholas Haywood Jewellery on board as our major sponsor,” said Fashions on the Field coordinator Renee Lindley. “It’s an honor and a privilege to help Nicholas pay homage to his mum Helen, and to showcase his beautiful jewellery.

“I’m also thrilled that our long-standing millinery, accommodation and floral partners are on board again this year, as the competition could not go ahead without their ongoing support and generosity.”

The four categories this year include Best Dressed Local, Best Dressed Visitor, Best Suited and Best Headwear.

This year’s event will once again celebrate individual style and creativity. “Our judges will expect head to toe styling across every category, however, they will also be looking for uniqueness and fashion with an edge,” said Renee.

The Best Dressed Local category is open to those who reside within the Cootamundra-Gundagai Regional Council or Snowy Valleys Council. Best Dressed Visitor will be open to anyone who resides outside these council areas.

“In the Best Dressed categories, the key focus for judges will be head to toe grooming and a look that stands out from the crowd – every aspect, from the hair, to the clothing, to the millinery, to the accessories, must all complement each other,” said Renee. “With this year's Spring fashion colour palette ranging from soft pastels, to earthy neutrals, to bold greens, deep navies, and rich plums, there's really no better place to show your individual style and wear what you love.”

The Best Suited category is again open to entrants both locally and from afar. The suit must consist of at least two coordinated pieces – either a jacket and pants or jacket and skirt. Headwear is essential. “Structured suiting is still very popular. We are also seeing a lot of accessorizing with unique brooches, pocket squares, jewellery and belts, so this category is going to be a tough one for the judges,” said Renee.

Those entering the Best Headwear category need a statement headpiece. Complementary styling is what the judges will be looking for, so the headpiece must be carefully considered in the overall styling.

'Most importantly - and this applies to all categories - dress not only for the season, but also for comfort and confidence,” says Renee. “If you love what you're wearing and it fits you well, then you are going to stand out and have a lot more fun.

The final judging panel is still being finalized, however, organisers can confirm lead judges will be Sally Pitt from Christian Dior Couture and Michael Rogers, formally of Chanel.

Entrants can nominate themselves on the day with an on-course facility set up near the main stage, specifically for Fashions on the Field entrants. Judging will commence after Race 3 and may run across a couple of races, depending on entrant numbers.

The Snake Gully Cup Carnival is about more than the results. It brings together racing enthusiasts, locals and visitors to celebrate the traditions and community spirit that make country racing such a special part of regional New South Wales.

Boudvillain’s five winners provided a standout storyline across the two-day carnival, with victories spanning multiple race classes and distances.

From Silver Serenade’s opening win to Wonderful Mistake’s contribution to the five-winner tally, the results captured the excitement and unpredictability that keep racegoers coming back.

Five winners across two days is an achievement worth celebrating, and Boudvillain’s performance added another memorable chapter to Gundagai’s racing calendar.

As the Snake Gully Cup continues to bring the community together, performances like this are a reminder of the talent, teamwork and excitement behind every race.

A Decade Later: Scobie Relives Zero to Ten's Fairytale Snake Gully Cup Win

The cheers might have faded, but for trainer Jim Scobie, the glory of Zero to Ten's 2015 Snake Gully Cup victory remains as vivid as ever. The local horse delivered a massive upset on a rain-soaked track, a win that Scobie recalls as the culmination of a journey with a horse initially deemed too difficult for the racetrack.

Zero to Ten, a horse who banked nearly $200,000 and won nine races for Scobie, was a complete surprise package.

"He was given to us originally for showjumping purposes because he was a very difficult horse on the racetrack," Scobie reminisced.

"The previous owner and trainer decided they didn’t want to go on with him. They gave him to us, and I just poked along with him, and he won nine races."

The 2015 Cup day was anything but straightforward. Zero to Ten had raced just two days prior in Sydney, and only gained a start in the Gundagai feature as an emergency due to heavy rain and a number of scratchings. Scobie admitted he was initially reluctant to start. "I didn’t actually intend to start him," he said.

"When we got a few scratchings, I didn’t want to pay the scratching fee, so I started him." The wet conditions, however, proved to be the key to the chestnut's success. "The conditions were to his liking at Snake Gully Cup because it was very wet, and he was just quite competent in the wet conditions and drew an inside gate," Scobie explained.

The victory was also a landmark moment for his young jockey, Nick Heywood, who was an apprentice at the time. Scobie credits Heywood with securing his "first notable win for sure."

The relationship between trainer and jockey was born out of the horse’s challenging temperament. Scobie revealed that Zero to Ten was so difficult that "they used to hide under the benches in the jockeys' room and go and hide in the showers" to avoid riding him.

It was Heywood who showed courage and commitment. "Nick Heywood was the one who put his hand up and he said,'I'll ride him for you, Jim, no worries,' and I never forget that," Scobie shared. "So when the time came and he was in a better race, Nicko was the first choice."

The victory was a rare local triumph. Scobie noted he and David Blundell are the only Gundagai-based trainers to have ever won the Snake Gully Cup.

Zero to Ten was a long shot, paying 20/1 on the track, though some lucky punters got 50-60/1. "I think everyone had a couple of bucks on him because he was a local," Scobie said.

For the owners—Scobie's wife and son—the $32,000 prize money was substantial. "It was a good payday, he got $32,000," Scobie recalled. "For us, that was a lot of money."

Scobie, however, didn't share in the punter’s excitement, adhering to a personal philosophy. "I never had a bet," he stated."I’ve just learnt over the years that if you want to keep punting on your own horses, you probably just lose money, so I don’t punt anyway. And you don’t have to when you get the prize money."

Scobie still has the trophy, a tangible reminder of the day when a reluctant show jumper, a determined young apprentice, and a soaked track came together for a true fairytale win.

Instead, a maiden on Snake Gully Cup day will carry an additional $100,000 bonus if the winner is qualified through the Inglis sales.

Gundagai has two maidens on cup day, Friday, November 13, including a Super Maiden already worth $50,000.

If the winning horse is eligible it will be a first prize money return of $122,000.

First prizemoney for the Snake Gully Cup is $48,000 in a total of $100,000 meaning the Inglis maiden will be one of the richest lower class races in country NSW.

Gundagai-Adelong Race Club secretary Michael Heath announced the incentive in the lead-up to Sunday’s meeting which honours the memory of some of the stalwarts of racing in the town.

“It’s a huge bonus which we are pleased to attach to the Snake Gully Cup meeting,” he said.

“It will help ensure a quality field and I’m sure many of the major stables will aim a horse for it and hopefully bring another for one of the feature races.

“It’s such a great two-day carnival and the bonus is another incentive for owners and trainers.

“We are also looking to incorporate a few other ideas we have in place leading into the meeting.”

Some of the major stables in Australia have previously targeted super maidens at country tracks and given the bonus race falls on Snake Gully Cup day it will also attract plenty of attention.
